17th Annual Mauka to Makai Environmental Expo
Saturday, April 13, 2024, Friends of Hanauma Bay were again invited to participate in the Waikiki Aquarium Mauka to Makai Environmental Expo. Designed to be a family-friendly event with fun educational exhibits and hands-on activities, residents and visitors alike would learn about conservation activities sponsored by city and state agencies and environmental efforts done by local organizations.
Starting at 9:00 A.M., Sheila Mackertich and Paul Halvorson opened the event by displaying information regarding FOHB’s stewardship of Hanauma Bay to help conserve, preserve, and restore it. Information was available regarding recycling efforts, reef-friendly sunscreen, and safe snorkeling guidelines. For the keiki visitors, there were informational bookmarks to color and collect and the ever-popular habitat game of marine animals at Hanauma Bay.
Throughout the five-hour event, the 2000 visitors and especially residents were encouraged to become repeat visitors to the bay. Lon and Leslie Briggs concluded the event at 2:00 P.M.
