Update on Landmark Hanauma Bay Coral Restoration Project
We are pleased to share that the Porites evermanni modules outplanted at Hanauma Bay are looking fantastic and growing well! Outplanted a year ago in a landmark coral restoration project in Hanauma Bay, six 42 cm modules covered with endemic Porites evermanni, grown at the Hawaii Coral Restoration Nursery and outplanted in the Bay, show all modules are very healthy and have continued to grow “lumps” like their natural growth form and grow down onto the natural reef substrate.

These photos are courtesy DAR and were taken on their one-year outplant anniversary (April 4th, 2024).
This landmark coral restoration project was conceived and funded by Friends of Hanauma Bay through a generous donation from the Kahiau Foundation. Mahalo nui loa to the Hawaii State Coral Restoration Nursery for the expertise to fast-grow replacement endemic coral colonies that were damaged or destroyed and outplant them successfully in Hanauma Bay, Hawaiiʻs oldest Marine Life Conservation District.
